Merry Mittens
Just in case you have run out of Christmas project ideas - hahahaha - here is another!
Merry Mittens!
Trace 5 mittens on the right side of your fabric and cut out on the traced line.
I cut a piece of contrasting fabric for the cuff. My cuff fabric measured 1.5" by the width of the top of the mitten, about 3". You can make a cuff any size or have no cuff at all. Stitch your cuff to the top of the mitten.
Trace the letters MERRY either on a fusible web product or directly on the right side of the letter fabric and cut out on the traced line. If you choose to adhere your letters to the mitten with a fusible web such as, Wonder Under, I have added a set of letters in reverse to make it easier. Follow the manufacturers instructions.
I cut my letters from the right side of the fabric then sandwiched them with batting and backing. I top stitched around the edge of each letter and then added large black stitches with Valdani size 8 perle cotton. The letters have a raw edge.
Next I placed a piece of batting behind each of the mitten fronts and added a little machine quilting. Once quilted, I trimmed away the excess batting. Add perle cotton stitches if you desire to the mitten front.
Place the fabric letter on the front of the mitten and top stitch ( over your previous stitching line ) or hand stitch in place.
To finish the mittens, I placed my front with batting on top of a larger rectangle of backing fabric. This backing fabric should be larger than the mitten front and you should have right sides facing. Pin the mitten in place and stitch around the mitten, leaving the top of the mitten open for turning. Use a 1/4 inch seam allowance for stitching and be careful on the curvy sections so your mitten is nicely rounded.
Clip the curves and the thumb section of your mitten, being careful not to cut into the seam.
Turn your mitten right side out and smooth out all the seams.
Fold in the back and front mitten top towards each other and give a press. Machine stitch or hand stitch the top of the mitten closed.
Take a length of chunky yarn and hand stitch the mittens to the yarn being sure to space them evenly. Place pom-poms or wool felt balls between the mittens and along the yarn to add whimsy!
Have fun with your Merry Mittens! And be sure to tag Sunny Day Supply if you make a set!
