Sunny Stocking SAL 2025

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Time for the Sunny Stocking SAL!

This is such an easy, relaxed Sew Along. No need to sign up, no need to pay for a subscription, or even a pattern. Just sew a stocking along with us!

Each year, I try to have a new stocking design! This year our stocking has a bit of a Scandi vibe.

I've added the X blocks with a simple schoolhouse and pine trees. Of course, you don't have to use this pattern or any of the patterns from previous years, but they are here for you in case you are looking for ideas.

**TIP: I traced my template onto the non-waxy side of freezer paper so I could press my template to my panel before cutting**

Putting the Stocking Together

Piece either by FPP or traditional piecing 5 - X Blocks, 4 - Pine Trees, and 1 - Schoolhouse.

Of course, you can adjust the number of elements you use or eliminate elements if desired.

**TIP: if you are piecing by hand or machine, just add 1/4" seam allowance to the shapes in each pattern**

Using a quarter inch seam allowance, stitch the five X Blocks together.

Sew together the Pine Tree Blocks in a row.

As we put together the panel for your stocking, remember we are making it larger than the stocking template. This will give you enough room to adjust your stocking template on the panel before cutting out the stocking shape.

Cut a top band from background fabric that measures 1.5" X 10.5".  Fold the strip in half to find the center.

Find the center of the row of X Blocks and match with the center of the top band. Using a quarter inch seam allowance, sew the background strip and X Blocks together.

Cut another 1.5" X 10.5" strip from the background fabric and find the center. Sew this strip below the X strip. Remember to match the centers.

Next, we will frame the Schoolhouse Block. Cut two strips- 1" X 4.5" - for the top and bottom from the background fabric. Sew a strip to the top and bottom of the Schoolhouse Block.

Cut two strips - 1" X 5.5" - for the sides of the Schoolhouse. And cut four 1" X 1" green squares. Sew a green square to the top and bottom of the two side strips.

Matching seams, sew the green square plus strip units to the sides of the Schoolhouse Block.

Because we need to make sure the center Schoolhouse section is wide enough for our Stocking Template, we will add two background sections to both sides of the house. From the background fabric, cut two rectangles 3.5" wide and 5.5" tall. Sew a rectangle to each side of the Schoolhouse.

Find the center of the X Block plus strips unit and sew this unit above the Schoolhouse.

Cut another strip from the background fabric measuring 1.5" X 10.5". Again, find the center of the strip and the center of the Schoolhouse unit. Meet the centers and sew the strip along the bottom of the Schoolhouse unit.

Now we are ready to add the Pine Tree Block row, but first we need to add background sections to both ends of the Pine Tree Row. Cut two background rectangles measuring 3"X3.5". Sew a rectangle to each end of the Pine Tree row. This will accommodate the curve in the foot.

For the foot and heel area of the stocking you will just need a large section of background fabric. I cut a piece 13.5" wide and 6" long. Find the center of this rectangle and match it to the center of the Pine Tree section and sew together.

Press your panel and place your stocking template on top of the panel.

As you can see my panel is much larger than my stocking shape. Use a lightbox or a window to adjust your stocking template on the panel. You can either cut your stocking shape with the template pinned to your panel, or you could use a disappearing marker and trace the shape. If you choose to trace your shape, it gives you another opportunity to look at the placement before cutting.

Cut the stocking shape from your panel. Baste a piece of batting larger than your stocking on the wrong side of the stocking. I adhere my batting to my stocking with temporary basting spray (505). You may also baste with pins or thread baste. Quilt as desired.

Trim away the excess batting.

Cut out a back shape for your stocking. Be sure you have the back of the stocking oriented correctly so you don't end up with two "fronts".  Baste batting to the wrong side of the back and quilt as desired.

If you would like to add Ric Rac or Ball Fringe to the outline of your stocking, now is the time to baste the trim to the stocking front.

Before putting the stocking together, this would be the time to add a hanger to your stocking. You can also choose to pin a hanger to the inside of your stocking if you rather.

I simply folded a 3" strip of fabric in half lengthwise. Press a crease and open. Now fold the long raw edges into the center and press again. Stitch down the length of this small strip.

Arrange the hanger on the front of the stocking and pin in place. Stitch the hanger to the stocking.

Cut two lining stocking shapes.

Take the stocking front and match the top straight edge with the top straight edge of the front lining piece. Stitch and finger press the seam toward the lining. Repeat with the stocking back and lining piece.

Now you will have two stocking units, a front with lining sewn to the top straight edge and a back with lining sewn to the top straight edge. Place the two stocking units on top of each other with right sides facing. The lining will be, right side facing, on top of the lining, and the front/back stocking will be on top of each other with right sides facing.

Matching the top seams and using a quarter inch seam allowance, stitch around the entire stocking and lining. Leave a 4" gap in the foot of the lining unstitched! This open area will be for turning the stocking right side out.

**TIP: Be sure the hanger is out of the seam allowance when you stitch the stocking front and back together. You can pin it out of the way.

Turn the stocking right side out and gently push out the toe and heel. Sew the open area closed.

Give your stocking a good press and sew a top stitch around the opening.

Let me know if you have any questions! We can't wait to see all your stockings during the sew along! There will be prizes awarded, so please use the hashtags #sunnystockingsal2025 and #sunnystockingsal
