Tips for the Stylish Sewing Caddy!!!
Hello! I have had fun making the NEW Stylish Sewing Caddy from Zakka Workshop and Krystine from @prettybyhand!
Today, I want to share with you a couple of my tips for compeleting your new sewing caddy.
First, if you have a directional fabric, you want to be sure you are cutting the pieces for the front, back and sides correctly. The first measurement in the pattern's cutting instructions is the width(side to side) of your bag piece and the second is the height (top to bottom). Of course, I used my acrylic ruler and rotary to cut out my front/back, pockets, bottom and sides. But for the purpose of this blog post and to illustrate the orientation of the cuts on my directional fabric, I made a paper template of the front and back piece.
You can see, that with a fat quarter, I can easily cut the front and the back pieces side by side on the fat quarter. If you are trying to fussy-cut for the front and back, my suggestion would be to create a template from paper or quilters plastic to use in cutting out your pieces. Remember that the pocket covers part of your front and back sections, so you will want any desireable design element to be above the pockets.
Because the Fruit Label print has so many fun elements, I simply cut a strip from the top of my fat quarter and sub-cut for my front and back pieces.
Again, with the sides and the pockets, make sure that you are careful about any directional fabric.
My second tip is to use a fabric pen or a Frixion Pen to mark points that are important. I used a Frixion Pen (always test first) to mark the line around the outside of the bag for the wire casing.
When I prepared to sew the lining pieces together, I folded the pieces in half and pressed. Then I could match the creases for proper placement of the lining pieces prior to stitching.
And, finally, not really a tip, but an option. I used 40mm macarons to cover and place on the ends of my zipper!
I hope these tips help as you make your sewing caddy! It's a fun pattern and make a very roomy bag for all your sewing supplies!
**PLEASE NOTE - You will find a slip of paper with a Lining Cutting Correction inside your pattern. The lining front/back should be cut (2 pieces) 14.5" X 8" **
Happy Sewing!!!
